Typically, castles medieval churches etc, are large spaces with low levels of daylight and for very good conservation reasons often poorly illuminated. Such interiors demand a highly skilled sympathetic lighting approach.

These man-made
caverns with large open spaces leave nowhere to place lights without them being in the shot. At the same time they cry out for a additional illumination executed sympathetically with careful use of supplementary lighting.

IOP overcome these previously impossible hurdles by using a technique called 'light-painting' involving multiple exposures with high powered roving-flash-heads lighting specific sections of the interior step by step until the entire structure has been covered.

This approach can yield a collection of up to sixty-five partially-lit images, amounting to up to 1.4gig of 16bit files.

This collection of images is then carefully blended together using as much, or as little of each individual exposure, to reveal details in the highest-darkest recesses of the building without overwhelming the natural ambience of these special places.

Inevitably this technique is time consuming both to shoot, and to computer process afterwards. But;
there really is no other way to successfully breath life into an open space interior, to take light where no light has gone before!
